Young Scientist

Let’s gets started by quoting something from the film ‘A Beautiful Mind
“Everything is connected, that everything is part of the same subject”. What we intend to do here is to get you to ask questions to every possible thing you see around yourself. You are the “eager, young minds of tomorrow” and you just can’t be “terrified, mortified, petrified, stupefied” by science.

For being a scientist you need not to go the labs, work with sophisticated instruments, do crazy experiments (like the ones in marvel and dc movies) and give a splendid result. You can be a scientist by just even asking a basic simple question which no one had asked before and that forms the basis of all the discoveries and inventions. Millions of years of evolution are the result of just asking questions, asking to yourself, asking to people around you, asking nature. And while asking the question, we must be prepared for a lie for a wise man once said “hardest time to lie to somebody is when they are expecting to be lied to.” Observations can be deceptive; it is where the experiments come into play to reveal the real truth behind. By the way that wise man was Benedict Cumberbatch portraying famous mathematician Alan Turing in the movie The Imitation Games.

Let’s start by talking about something that has got even Elon Musk, one of the greatest thinkers of our time responsible for self-driving cars and reusable rockets, worried, Artificial Intelligence, which according to us may be the new electricity. So what is AI, you may think it is the venture to make super- intelligent robots that may take over the world in the future and although the ultimate aim is to make intelligent bots that may think on their own but currently, we are far away from that dream and AI is so much more than that as a matter of fact you come across AI daily without even knowing it. The voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Apple’s Siri apply Natural Language Processing to understand what you speak and that is possible because
of Deep Reinforcement Learning one of the biggest and most exciting field in AI. When Amazon or Netflix shows you what you may like again Learning Algorithm called a recommender system is working behind the scenes and it has learned overtime what you may like and shows recommendations suited for you. Speaking of computing power another technology that is resulting in super-fast computers is quantum computing solet’s talk about that.

Quantum Computing is the field where the principles of quantum mechanics are applied to making computers that are faster than the classical computers and process information in a very different way, where the binary digital electronic computers use bits (1’s and 0’s) to store information the quantum
page1image1767104computers use Qubits or quantum bits which are based on quantum properties of superposition and entanglement and can be in a superposition of multiple states. Recently the largest ever 51 Qubit machine with cold atoms was successfully tested and announced at the international conference of quantum technologies at Moscow in 2017. Another important technology tested based on quantum entanglement was by a group of Chinese researchers who were successfully able to teleport a photon from Earth to a
satellite in space using mirrors and lasers, quantum entanglement allows quantum objects to be linked even when separated by large distances. This technology has applications in how energy and information is moved and may result in the creation of a super-speed quantum internet which will be virtually hack-proof.

Let’s take a break here and have a kit-kat.

#Funfact 1 : If you have watched Phineas and Ferb or still watch this amazing cartoon then you must be knowing the cute and smart Perry the Platypus. Well the platypus is not so cute and cuddly.
#Funfact 2: Lasers can get trapped in waterfall. This is an example of total internal reflection and working principle behind optic fibre cable to guide the flow of light.

Speaking of space, humans have been in space for more than 50 years now let’s see what we have been“upto” up there. We have been searching for somebody to talk to in that loneliness obviously, Alienshave intrigued humans for a long time now and we have been looking for some planet suitable for life like Earth and maybe now this long search may finally have resulted in something. ESO the European organization for astronomical research have reported a Planet called LHS 1140b only a block away in space terms of 40 light years and it is the closest any planet is to the earth it lies in the habitable zone(not too hot nor too cold with a possibility of existence of water in large scales) called the “goldilocks”zone of a red dwarf dim star it also has a atmosphere and receives half as much light from its sun as the earth does from its. Also NASA has found a group of 7 Earth-sized planets called the “Trappist-1” system39 light years away in the Aquarius system surrounding a star with 3 of the 7 planets lying in the habitable zone and based on the general size and proximity to the star NASA predicts these can be habitable, Currently the radiation from the star it surrounds is more than the normal level but NASA says that it will fall to suitable levels in the next decade and then we can explore life there.

Why Aarohan?

The ultimate essence, the grandeur element and that surreal excitement! Nothing else describes BITS Pilani’s technical fest APOGEE better than the above phrasing. People have their own reasons for doing anything, but end up for one; that they give up. The quintessential culmination of your being, of your existence is exhibited when you give something your all, your very best. And who doesn’t love the feeling of being in the driver seat with the ultimate control? Necessarily, this is what science is all about; about doing it your way, learning throughout and giving back to the society, while salvaging your own piece of the pie.

While you read this, there is someone out there doing ‘stuff’. What I mean by ‘stuff’ is research, observation and learning. When you do something truly great or ground-breaking, it is all very settling yet overwhelming. The coherent panache creates an aura of awe around you. The exhilaration of solving an actual problem and probably earning a few beaming smiles is a very endearing feeling. Science is a demanding endeavour; it requires grit, perseverance and an unending desire to learn.

You create! You sustain! You grow or you crash! But in the end, you learn.

Or if you’re already out there, in those abyssal depths of it, trying to find a way through the impetus of the magnates, exhuming enthusiasm and energy; it is now your turn to stand among those from the hall of fame.  This is your big break, your ticket to a better destiny. We’re so sure that you have so much to offer to the society, to the people and we want to give you a shot at that.

Aarohan is your ticket-in. Ticket-in to what? To your interest in the sciences. Aarohan aims to inculcate scientific temperament and interest in the field of sciences and engineering. This is an amazing opportunity as you visit BITS Pilani during a grand technical symposium called APOGEE. Youwould also get a chance to attend a mélange of interesting and challenging technical workshops and events(Humanoid Robots, RC Planes, Formula Cars, Sky Watching, Hackathons etc) and a gamut of talks by Nobel Laureates, world renowned researchers and tech-aficionados from around the globe.

This is a one of kind experience as all of our past winners have noted. It gives you a different vision, a new perspective to look at things; a scientific perspective.

So come on! Let’s get curious and dive into the world of science. Contact us if you want to conduct ‘Aarohan’ in your school.

Aarohan - Ascent of Knowledge

आरोहण’ (Aarohan) is a Sanskrit word which means ‘to mount or climb on uphill’. We’re in a world where there is no glory without endeavour, no recognition without achievements and no self-satisfaction without personal motivation. Innovation and hard-work are the new currencies of this world. The one who encashes on these to get the most versatile product or result, wins.

Aarohan is a national level examination crafted and conducted by the students of BITS Pilani for higher secondary students. Birla Institute of Science and Technology, Pilani (BITS Pilani)is a premier engineering college of India, an Institute of Eminence (IoE)as regarded by the Government of India and a global front-runner in the race for innovation and technology, providing the finest quality technical education in the field of engineering, sciences and pharmacy. BITS Pilani’s motto of ‘Innovate! Achieve! Lead!’ is an indicator of our resolve to promote innovation in sciences.

A special team works round the year and researches various bleeding edge scientific topics. Our U.S.P is our question paper which focuses on some extraordinary scientific phenomenon as its base theme and is designed by students and verified by a panel of faculty. The idea is to present those scientific topics and frame questions so that even the school students can get the grasp of it without the knowledge of much more advanced stuff. This serves to trigger an interest among these students. This is a question paper pattern which is entirely unique.

The name of this examination serves us well to justify the motive of this examination. Aarohan, which means Ascent in Sanskrit, caters to the students studying in classes IX, X, XI and XII. The regional finalists are invited to APOGEE with their accommodation expenses taken care of by the organizing committee. This becomes a once in a lifetime opportunity for these students who get to experience such a grand technical symposium at such a young age. They would also get a chance to attend a mélange of interesting and challenging technical workshops and events(Humanoid Robots, RC Planes, Formula Cars, Sky Watching, Hackathons etc) and a gamut of talks by Nobel Laureates, world renowned researchers and tech-aficionados from around the globe.

In 2017, 33 students and their guardians had come down to Pilani, to be a part of this technical extravaganza. Additionally, school winners are honoured with attractive prizes and certificates for the same.

Aarohan is an examination for the students, and by the students to inculcate scientific temperament among any who solves our paper.
